Louis Daniel Armstrong, also known by the stage names “Satchmo,” “Satch,” and “Pops,” was an American trumpeter and singer who lived from August 4, 1901, to July 6, 1971.

He was one of the most important people in jazz. His career spans five decades as well as many jazz periods. Numerous honors were bestowed upon him, including the Grammy for Best Male Vocal Performance for Hello, Dolly! in 1965, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously given to him in 1972, and his 2017 entry into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame.

Armstrong grew up in New Orleans where he was born. Armstrong, a creative trumpet and cornet musician who rose to fame in the 1920s, had a fundamental impact on jazz by reorienting the music’s emphasis from group improvisation to solo performance. Around 1922, he traveled to Chicago with his tutor Joe “King” Oliver to join the Creole Jazz Band.

Armstrong was reported to have been in several relationships with different women. Reports have it that, he first married Daisy Parker on March 19th, 1919 and their marriage lasted for only four years when they seperated in 1923.

Soon after his seperation with Parker, he married Lil Hardin Armstrong on February 4th 1924 who was a divorcee. Lil Hardin played a very significant role in his career but they separated in 1931 and officially divorced in 1938.

Armstrong then entered his third marriage with Alpha Smith in the 1940’s and it lasted for only four years and reportedly separated in 1942.  However, Louis Armstrong didnt give up on his marriage dream, he went ahead and got married for the fourth time to Lucille Wilson who was a singer at the cotton club, they married in 1942 and remained married until louis last breath in 1971.
