Lana, Before & After. She's had a nose job, facial work and now has fuller lips.
It's always hilarious when these celebs deny have ANY work done, especially when their old photos inevitably show up with their original faces. I laughed out loud when Priyanka Chopra was on The VIEW and vehemently denied having a nose job, meanwhile, her mom, who has a huge nose, was right in the audience! Prinyaka's nose job can easily be Googled.

It looks like she's growing her natural hair color back—I believe she is a natural blonde. As far as the weight goes, I noticed several years ago that she had gotten a bit plump, but it was slight and mostly noticeable around her hips/thighs. She looked cute with or without it. When she first came on the scene with "Born to Die," she was very thin, and the weight gain was gradual so I think most people didn't notice because she carried it well. In the last six months though she's gained enough that it's showing significantly in her upper body as well. I know there are people out there who have a theory that she secretly gave birth to a child and has kept it from the public, but I find this hard to believe. I love her music—it's a fine mixture of gorgeous, lush, nostalgic, and depressing. I find her a compelling artist despite what her detractors say.

R66 I agree. Se pretty much started shedding the "Lolita lost in the ghetto" shtick after her first album made her famous. Everything she's done since has been much more toned-down and mature, especially her last record. She seems like a very casual person in real life--still very much an artist "on the inside," though, as you say. I enjoy her music immensely and find a lot of it truly heartbreaking.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | July 26, 2020 5:05 PM |
R14 she looked very much like Anna Paquin, pre-cosmetic adjustments. Either way she’s pretty, there’s no denying, but what’s cool about her is that this has been secondary to her sound and aesthetic. I think she’d still be making moody pouty gloomy music either way - the gimmick and the glam look just helped.
[quote] she's always mostly always been a bit doughy even when thin. Some people just really hate exercise.
True. Sympathise with Lana, as I’m also this way; for a woman naturally bony & big-framed (in that German/Saxon way) and average-tall (5”6) with a low appetite, but fucking hate any exertion beyond a long walk - there is always something more interesting to do than going to the gym or running or doing yoga - and with a slow metabolism. When in a depression phase I sometimes go ham with the sugar & grease (not a drinker, thank fuck) and do not move my body beyond a shuffle to the kitchen if I can help it. At worst I chubbed out á la LDR (175-80lbs at my fattest), but thankfully I was a College fresher at the time and so the gain mostly went to my tits.
These days I’m hovering at 145-50 lbs, and unless you get a close look at me shirtless or in skinny jeans I don’t look that big or fat. I’ve actually been eating less and becoming picky/disinterested in food during lockdown for some reason, though my non-existent exercise regimen has not changed. I should probably dig out a football or my dog’s frisbee for an hour a day, just in case. Or pick up smoking and/or pills.

She’s a Cancer Stellium person and an 8th houser/Pluto 12th type, indicating she’s fond of home-cooking and eating by herself. It’s likely she tends towars comfort/emotional-eating, and possibly struggles with secrecy or cycles of starvation-bingeing. She has Venus in Taurus which implies a natural voluptuous curvy body type, but also Saturn in the 1st house (‘rising’) which gives her a sturdy slender visible bone-structure keeps her from morbid obesity or a high-BMI.
Astrology indicates she could boost her health if she did a seafood diet or went on a green food/herbivore plan, and by emotionally comforting herself via other senses such as smell (via perfume, aromatherapy, diffusers & candles) or touch (certain fabrics on clothes or upholstery, a blanket, comfy socks). She might also try to exercise and training via martial arts (for Saturn & Scorpio, arcane discipline), dance (for Leo Moon, close to the Midheaven) or lifting and pulling weights (for Taurus the Bull).

R109 that's kind of the point, though. She writes downbeat, atmospheric, sad music that suits her voice. I think a lot of her music is truly beautiful—sad, but that doesn't mean it isn't pretty. She was never going to be a hit for the masses, but she has managed to accrue a large cult following and has stacked her bills nicely.

R103 I don't know about drugs, but she's said she had a bad drinking problem when she was a teenager, hence why she was sent to one of the most expensive boarding schools in the country (she claims her uncle got her financial aid, but I doubt she needed it--her dad got loaded in domain investing in the '90s). One of my only pet peeves with her is that she refuses to admit that she came from a well-off family, and that her living in a trailer park while she was attending college was by her own choice (she went to Fordham by the way, which is an expensive school--I know because I also went there and footed the bill).

by Anonymous | reply 114 | July 31, 2020 8:52 AM |
I think she's talented and has appeal, but she's overrated.
Her face is beautiful but is on the cusp of looking mutilated by cosmetic alterations.
Her songwriting is more interesting than Taylor Swift's and Lady Gaga's and a million times more interesting than Adele's sing-by-numbers generic lyrics...I can't think of a lot of youngish singer-songwriters (who write their own music) to compare her with. And it seems to be evolving a bit, which is good, because you can only sustain the self-destructive gothy thing for so long, and Billie Eilish has taken up residence in that slot, which really does belong to adolescents like Billie and not 35 year-olds like Lana.
Her singing is good enough and suited to the music she writes. She's not a belter, and God knows we don't need another American Idol-style belter in pop music. She has a pretty head voice but seems to prefer her droning lower register and whisper-singing.
Normally, I would say that a person can't be held responsible for being overrated because it's other people who rate them, but Lana lost a lot of the esteem I had for her when she went after Ann Powers for giving her a GREAT-but-not-good-enough-for-Lana review. That made her seem like a spoiled, egomaniacal brat, and that's a really gross look on a 35 year-old, no matter how pretty.

This precisely. Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande—pretty much all vapid and dull songwriting. Adele's music is quite basic but I do think her voice is gorgeous and that she's singing from the heart, so she gets a pass from me. The reality is that I can't stand 99% of the women in pop music today, but Lana is a rare exception. She is in her own league—there's really nobody else like her. A lot of her songs are also admittedly about relationships and men, but at least they demonstrate that she has an imagination—there is always something unusual and confounding about them, lyrically and sonically. Taylor Swift's music makes me want to jump off of a roof, not Lana's.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | August 1, 2020 5:51 AM |
R116 It never occurred to me that Ariana Grande writes her own music. Does she? I honestly have never listened to her because her mumble-singing and vowel-mangling is a total turnoff to me, even though her voice sounds pretty.
Was I wrong to assume that Ariana Grande is a pop-production princess whose songs are written by committees of of-the-moment songwriters? I didn’t include Beyoncé, for example, in my post at R115 because of persistent rumors that she takes personal writing credit for her collaborators’ work. (I just looked up Lemonade, and the second track is credited to all these people: Beyoncé, Thomas Wesley Pentz, Ezra Koenig, Emile Haynie, Joshua Tillman, Uzoechi Emenike, Sean Rhoden, Doc Pomus, Mort Schuman, DeAndre Way, Antonio Randolph, Kelvin McConnell, Brian Chase, Karen Orzolek, Nick Zinner—15 writers!!!! for one song!!!
Lana Del Rey at least is the creative genesis of her lyrics, as are Gaga (who does bring in a lot of collaborators, but you can tell by her lyrics and somg structures over time that she is the primary writer) and Swift, so they do all stand apart from and above other pop stars like Beyoncé. I just looked up Ariana Grande on Wikipedia and her “Thank U, Next” album includes songs with up to 10 writers.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | August 1, 2020 3:21 PM |
R117 Ariana might have been a bad example--you're right, she's more like a Beyonce in that she's a pretty voice/face but not really an artist. I simply named her because she is among the most "relevant" women in pop music at the moment.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | August 1, 2020 4:54 PM |
My favorite artists by miles are (primarily) Tori Amos and Kate Bush and (also) Joni Mitchell, Fiona Apple, Laura Nyro and Regina Spektor. I obviously have a ‘type,’ yes—but besides the singer-songwriter-pianist genre, all of these women compose and write their own music entirely solo. They are auteur artists driven by personal visions rather than producers of products to be sold.
As an artist, I would put both Lana Del Rey and (yes) Taylor Swift into their bracket. I just don’t relate nearly as much to their work and find it less interesting overall than that of the women above. Lana’s interest and vision seems limited to her sad-vampy-daddy-fetishizer theme so far—I really hope she will outgrow it and expand her worldview—and while I honestly respect Taylor As a creative artist, it’s time for her to grow up.
Taylor is showing glimmers of thinking and expressing thoughts beyond romance, and Lana gives me a vibe she thinks beyond her limited storytelling range and I wish she would tell other sorts of stories. But even trapped within their respective boxes, both of these women are real creative talents and I have a lot of respect for their self-created music even if it’s not necessarily that interesting to me. They definitely are in a whole other pop bracket than the girls and boys who sing other people’s words.

Maybe this is a Joaquin Phoenix-like stunt she’s pulling on us?
Maybe the camo Route 66 cap and jean cutoffs are ironic and I’m just not cool enough to get it anymore?
I certainly miss the Valley of the Dolls-ish early Lana image. It suited her music, which hasn’t really evolved in 8 years, as much as I do enjoy it.

She is one lip implant away from becoming Amanda Lepore.

I love how fatties wear long hair that’s parted in the middle like Lana does in the photo. As if covering up fat face with hair will automatically fool people into thinking they’re not fat. I believe the plus-size Dutch princess also wears her hair this way. Who are they fooling?

Take a lesson, Lana. Topknots are slimming.

All the fatties part their hair down the middle. LOOKING AT YOU, LANA. We slim beauties know how to rock a Bumpit.

Everyday’s a good hair day for a skinny, happy girl like me!

The guy in (r11)'s video is gorgeous, despite the tattoos.

I write this all the time. Is Norman Fucking Rockwell about James Franco and what weird thing happened between them? He fetishized her persona, she fell for him, he used and discarded her, she's now fat and depressed? And he's ruined...
And I'm bored.

If she wrote an album about James Franco, then she’s far sadder of a person than her music even suggests.

R130 she didn't write an album about him, he wrote a fucking book about her, which I believe was tentatively titled "Real Conversations with Lana Del Rey." She admitted last year that, after reading it, she disputed a bunch of the things he had written and said he fabricated a lot of these "conversations," and he ended up never releasing the book. It was a creepy thing for him to do, but not surprising given how sleazy he is.

If James Franco ever shoots up a basement church or a movie theater, I will not be surprised. He is wired wrong.

That's not her, it looks like the same lady that's in this photo on her IG, someone named Jenny.

R136 huh? That is quite literally Lana

She's 35 and is white and probably has those fat genes. She probably smokes and drinks a lot too. She doesn't look terrible either. She was never a beauty.
