Conflicting reports have popped up, some saying Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) is all in on playing more Harley Quinn and others saying she is done or needing a break. Talking with Entertainment Tonight, the actress spoke about where her headspace is at for the future of the DC character.
While admitting that doing Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad right next to one another was a lot to take in, Margot Robbie is ready to don the make-up again as the clown with a bat. At this point, while the movies came out a year apart, filming was long enough, and being on the final stretch of 2021, she wants to do more with the iconic character.
“No, I’ve had enough of a break. I’m ready to do her again. I did Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad back-to-back, so that was a lot of Harley all in a one-year period, but that was a while ago now. I’m always ready for more Harley!”
Margot RobbieDuring the interview, Margot Robbie also gave her reaction to Leslie Grace (In the Heights) being cast as Barbara Gordon, or better known as her alter-ego as Batgirl, for the standalone movie on the character. While praising Grace, the star joked about calling up DC to set up a movie for the two of them to be together. “I didn’t know that! Oh, how cool! That’s wicked. She’s amazing,” she said. “Yeah, I’m calling– Warner Bros, can you put me through to DC? Yeah, thank you. I’m on it. Don’t worry.”
It is far from the first time Margot Robbie has voiced what she wants the future of Harley Quinn to look like. She has spoken to executives at Warner Bros. to introduce Poison Ivy into the DC Extended Universe. The Australian actress wants to show the relationship between the two supervillains on the big screen. If that were to happen, it would be a first for a blockbuster DC movie, but those roots go deep as the comics and shows. The Harley Quinn animated series have explored the dynamic of the two characters extensively.
Margot Robbie debuted as Harley Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad, which was directed by David Ayer (End of Watch). She produced and starred in her next entry with Birds of Prey, marking a departure from the style and tone of Ayer’s movie. Sticking to something similar with an R-rated bombastic comic book movie, she joined the ensemble cast of The Suicide Squad that is directed and written by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy). She might star in Gotham City Sirens by Ayer as she has expressed interest in it, but as of now, the movie is “on pause” without additional details of what is happening with the project.
In the interview with Entertainment Tonight, Margot Robbie also cleared up the confusion of how 2016’s Suicide Squad and 2020’s The Suicide Squad fit in the DC Extended Universe. Essentially, this latest take is like a comic book in that it tells a different story that is not in the same universe as the previous one. It is not a reboot, sequel, or prequel. It is a standalone story. This is how Margot Robbie herself explained it to Entertainment Tonight: “It’s not a sequel, prequel, or a reboot, really, because some characters cross over that people met in Suicide Squad, the one directed by David Ayer, and then there’s a whole ensemble of new characters,” she said. “It’s its own thing. It’s kind of like the comic books. Depending on who the author is, the comic might be different, the tone might be different, it’s like that.”
The latest outing as Harley Quinn for Margot Robbie meets a stacked cast that beats the 2016 edition. The Suicide Squad stars Idris Elba (Luther), John Cena (F9), Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy), Sylvester Stallone (Rocky), Nathan Fillion (Castle), Viola Davis (Fences), and many more. The film hits theaters and HBO Max this Friday (August 6).
